Hiking the slot canyons in Escalante Utah

This year the adventure trip is to Escalante Utah and the plan is to hike the slot canyons. The forecast had us a bit worried as a hurricane is passing through he area. That is hard to believe but a lot of rain is predicted which is treacherous in a slot canyon.

We arrived to see majestic views including rainbows and some rain. We did a little bit of hiking in the area before Escalante in Capital Reef. The views in the late afternoon were so beautiful. I just kept snapping pictures.

There were some small hikes to viewpoints which we did.
Group picture including Sheralee, Mary Z, Mary Fran, Laura, Kelli, Alicia, Brenda and Kathy.

Because it has been raining we decided to do the Boulder Mail Trail. It is not a slot canyon. SO we donned our rain gear and headed out. It was a hike across "slick rock". We walked for miles and it was different but beautiful. We saw some slot canyons being formed. Thousands of years from now someone will be hiking in them. We crossed a bubbly little stream that was inches deep with stones to step on and continued back uphill across more rock. It started to rain so we sat down and ate our lunches before turning back. It was raining harder and I was mesmerized but he little streams and waterfalls on the rock. It suddenly dawned on me that the water had no where to go enthuse rocks except down to the stream. So we sped up as it rained harder and harder. When we got to the stream it was no longer a cute little stream but a raging creek now. It was much deeper and full of debris. We created a chain and made it to the island that now had formed in the middle. The little land we were standing on started to disappear beneath our feet. With a nit of paid we knew that we had to get across quickly and up higher. We had someone in the creek and hanging onto them who created a handhold for everyone else to pass across. One lady did get dragged down but was caught and made it across. Once everyone was across we made it to high ground and once again were entranced by the little rivers and waterfalls. Lesson learned.

There is actually a landing strip here that includes landing for UFOs.

The next day we headed out to do some slot canyon hikes. The first day we did Zebra canyon. The pictures are out of order but it was so fun doing the canyons. The first day there was still water in the canyon but it was OK walking in it.

There was a big tad pole who was almost a frog in the canyon.

On the second day we did a couple of more slot canyons. Spooky and Peekaboo Canyons. It was a fun hike getting to them.

Kathy is always on the hunt for rocks. We found lots of moki balls in the dry riverbeds.

On the drive home we stopped in Capital Reef and did the Golden Throne hike. It was a short 3 miles up and had a great view of the Golden dome mountain.

There was a quick stop at the Escalante Museum where Laura played the old organ for us.
On the way back to Idaho we stopped at Kelli's home and she let us all spend the night. She has a lovely home and it was fun to be there.
The fish appear to be under water in a stream. It is a glass or acrylic casing that lights up.

Fluffy brought home some souvenirs. Lots of moki balls.
