Dominican Republic

Here is Jeff getting gas for the van. We had a three hour drive to get to Barahona where we are teaching the NRT courses. See the guard with the BIG gun. I wondered if we will start seeing similiar scenes at our gas stations.
We were driving along and I noticed the baby feet coming out from under the Mom's jacket. So sad...no helmits any where. Everyone is on motorbikes.
Pretty poor areas we drove through. Here is someone selling bananas from the front yard. Below is a chameleon on a branch. He blended in pretty well with the greenery. I woke up this morning and saw some climbing around in our room on the wall. Oh and last night and dinner we watched some rats run by our table. You eat outdoors here. Repeat after me, we are not in Kansas any more. Our toilet does not work, the dresser is busted, no hot water, the blow dryer does not work. I am feeling a bit grumpy this morning can you tell. However it is a stunningly beautiful place and the group we are teaching is great. Those we are working with are also great.

It is about 85 degrees and breezy today. It rained this morning. I sit outside on a veranda to do all of my paper work. The view is amazing...looking over the ocean. Tomorrow we will be driving to a Hospital an hour away to look at how to help them. (The missionary couple that is). We are also right by the Larimar mines (the pretty blue stone only found in this one mine on all of the earth). We will try to see the mines also.

Cute little Camelion. How much are you paying for gas there that they have to guard it with machine guns? Are you bringing back a pretty blue stone for your sister? I think it's good for YOU to rough it, it makes ME appreciate what I have. Thanks

It's good to be brought back down to earth every once in a while, don't ya think? The veranda spot sounds wonderful...and I'm with Magan. Don't talk to any homos.

Your pictures remind me of our trip to Jamaica (sp?) . . all the homes looked just like the one pictured! I 'feel' what you're saying about the conditions! Nice to visit - but so much nicer to step back on US soil! I did notice that even with the circumstances, the people were so happy! It was a great lesson on life for me. Hurry home!

I am still in total awe at the life you are living! The world is truly blessed to have people like you and Jeff. The pictures you post are amazing.

The pictures bring me back to my mission in the DR - I once saw a "moto" with 5 people on it! (kids were hanging off the sides). The houses look the same as when I was there. :) I also feel your pain - I had bucket showers and the power went out ALL the time! :) Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
