Salamanders Photo Gallery

Salamanders Photo Gallery by Bev Wigney at pbase.com

Here is the promised salamander post that I mentioned in a recent comment area. When I was a young girl I collected salamanders while living in Minnesota. I loved the slimy little critters. I would go out in the morning and check all of the neighbors window wells for them. Some were pretty big (as in a foot long). Somehow we came upon a big cardboard refrigerator box and built salamander world in it. Ponds, sticks to crawl on, grass and leaves. I think we had a large number of them, up to 70 unless I am too many years away from that to remember.
So one day my Dad had a friend come to visit. He had a can of beer and poured some into the salamander pond. A bunch of them died. So sad. I have not really seen any since then. I think I was in the fourth grade. The man's name was Mike Dabiski. How is that for a memory from the past? I never saw the man again either. And that concludes my salamander post.

Oh those stinky salamanders. I remember the smell more than anything. Between the creatures, the rotting grass and the wet cardboard box, there is no aroma that compares. I also remember Mike Dibisky, as I recall he was quite obnoxious. I remember him coming out of the bathroom and making a big deal about the toilet full of "rabbit turds". Why do some memories last forever?

Nice trip down Memory Lane mom! I have heard this story a time or two. Hard to imagine you were a tomboy in your past life...I don't think stinky salamanders would pass now!

I do not remember them being stinky. I really loved them. I also remember bringing home baby bunnies and birds to this house. I remember the day one of my baby bunnies died I cried for days. Very painful. A dog killed the Mommy bunny, I was traumatized.
